Most of the items below were originally written as extension teaching material for children aged 12-13 (Years 7-8).
Each presentation opens in its own tab/window and is in a slide-show format (based on PowerPoint),
such that its pages are all within one web page. Navigation within each presentation is via 'forward' and 'back' buttons at the bottom right (in most browsers). At the bottom left there is also a button to provide thumbnail views of all the pages in the presentation; clicking on a thumbnail will take you directly to the associated page. Additionally, each presentation has its own internal links and index for navigation. I am now retired but hope that my presentations may still be of interest both to school pupils and adults.
There is no charge for anything on this website but, if you feel the materials have been of value to you and would like to contribute in however small a way towards my running costs, that would be very welcome. To contribute via PayPal, please use paypal.me/psmmp1 (selecting For friends and family as the type of payment). Thank you for whatever amount you may choose to send.

World War II Holocaust Hitler [PowerPoint] |
Auschwitz & the Holocaust This presentation was inspired by a personal visit to Auschwitz-Birkenau in 2012. For several years until my retirement I used it in conjunction with a Jewish fellow teacher as part of a post-exam enrichment programme for Year 8 pupils, most of whose previous knowledge of the Holocaust was limited. The aim was not only to cover the Holocaust itself but also to relate events of the past to the still current dangers of political and religious extremism and, through the example of the Hitler Youth, to illustrate the risks, particularly to children, of indoctrination and radicalization. (Note that there are video clips in the presentation which may take several seconds to download to your browser.) |
Dover Castle [PowerPoint] |
Dover Castle This presentation provides a brief history of Dover Castle; it was originally intended as part of the preparation for a visit to the castle by Year 8 pupils. |
Bayeux Tapestry |
Bayeux Tapestry This is a jpg image of the whole tapestry as it survives today with Latin captions and their English translations added by myself. It was originally produced for a colleague teaching Year 6 (10-11 year old) pupils. (Note that the image is about 10 Mb in size and so may take several seconds to download to your browser. Once downloading is complete, enlarge the image in your browser to view it at its intended full size.) |
UK Parliament [PowerPoint] |
Introduction to Democracy & Parliament This presentation offers a brief background to democracy and an introductory history of the development of parliament and voting rights in the U.K.; it was originally used as part of a citizenship course for Year 8 pupils. For this topic, there is a large amount of material online. Perhaps particularly useful as a starting point is the UK government's own Teaching Parliament series of videos; from the same source there is also a handy 360° virtual tour of the Houses of Parliament. |
Islam [PowerPoint] |
Islam This presentation includes an account of the origin, rise, and beliefs of Islam; there is also a little information on the Arabic script. Its core was originally teaching material for Year 8 classes and more general reference items have since been added. |
Study Skills [PowerPoint] |
Study Skills I compiled this presentation originally to help Year 8 pupils prepare for their senior school entrance examinations, though much of the material is more generally applicable. |
